Deutsch-Elfe®-Grammatik-Magie
that saves me every day
Are you trying to improve your German, but endings like ein gutes Buch, mit einem guten Buch and die guten Bücher make you want to quit immediately? Are you annoyed that you keep forgetting that a knife is an “it”, a fork is a “she” and a spoon is a “he”? You and me both, my friend. Or at least, that was me for a long while. I had worked my way up to C1 by my last year of school, but I still felt like a hot mess whenever I had to actively use the language.
The good news is that forgetting things doesn't mean we're stupid or bad at languages. Some types of information are simply harder for our brains to learn and remember. Read my post to find out what makes them so difficult, with real examples from language learning.
If you’ve read my story, you already know that I was lucky enough to discover Peter Heinrich’s easyDaF.de project, which offers a complete mnemonic toolkit for German grammar and vocabulary: a book, video courses, songs, flashcards, games and more.
These mnemonic techniques worked like a charm for me back in 2018 when I moved to Austria, and I still use them every day. How? Here’s a sneak peek at what goes on in my head when I speak German these days.
When I need to decide...
Which article does the word "Honig" need?

I look at the "-ig" ending and this grumpy bacterium effortlessly pops into my mind. It's associated with "der". "Der Honig ". Now I'm sure.
"Ich habe gekommen" or "Ich bin gekommen"?

I remember that "kommen" was definitely one of the verbs in the Hamlet story! I choose "bin gekommen"!
"Ich gratuliere
dich" or "dir"?

I instantly go back to the funny mnemonic sentence I made up about congratulating the Dative-Dragon on his first flight. So I need Dative. It's "dir" then.
See if mnemonics improve your German too!

How likely is it to work for you?
As a language learner and teacher, I've experienced the benefits of mnemonics firsthand. I've also collaborated with Peter, translating his book and the subtitles for his course on German articles into Russian to make these materials accessible to more learners.
As a researcher, I particularly appreciate the academic literature he draws on in his book. Numerous experimental studies have demonstrated that mnemonic techniques can improve learning and retention.
Of course, mnemonics aren't a panacea, and there are a few important limitations worth keeping in mind: 1. Not all mnemonic techniques are equally effective. Some have stronger scientific support than others. 2. Spaced practice and retrieval remain important for long-term retention. Even an effective mnemonic doesn't replace the need to revisit and actively recall what you've learned. 3. Individual differences matter. The effectiveness of a technique can depend on the learner, the material and the learning conditions. 4. Provided versus self-generated mnemonics may differ in effectiveness, depending on the task and other factors. 5. Mnemonics should be used selectively. Not everything needs a mnemonic, and sometimes a simpler approach works just as well.
